CHAPTER 5  LEARNING THE BASICS ABOUT CANCER

OK, what's the first step?

The first step is to begin to understand the type of cancer you’re researching in the way we've outlined. There are many sites that you can access on the internet that will have good information and learning the basics about cancer is probably the easiest step in the entire process.

You must start with a basic framework before you get into the subtleties of cutting-edge treatments.

The way I’ve set up this process is that I’m going to provide a live link to the websites I recommend and then I’m going to show you sample searches on those websites using snapshots of the web pages themselves.

At the end of each sample search you’ll find a link to a video tutorial that you can access. You’ll also find links to all the video tutorials in the index at the front of the book and in the appendix at the back.

In the video you’ll see my computer screen and hear my voice as I search the same web sites.

The videos are meant to go hand and hand with the book. My recommendation is that you read the book and then watch the videos when you are ready to actually search the sites.

The first site that I recommend you visit is the website of the

National Cancer Institute (NCI), a division of the United States

National Institutes Of Health (known as the NIH). The NIH is one of

the world’s foremost medical research centers and is the focal point

for medical research sponsored by the federal government.

If you live in other countries then you may want to go to the equivalent web site of your country but the information should be similar.

There are a lot of advantages to going to the NCI site. First of all, you can be assured that all the information is legitimate. And you can be certain that the NCI is certainly not peddling any questionable cures.

Secondly, the information about the cancer treatments that we’ll access is written by leading oncologists (an oncologist is the medical term for a cancer specialist).

Thirdly, the information is updated frequently, especially if there have been major recent advances in the treatment of a particular cancer.

The site has information on over 200 cancers (I actually counted 205).

The site offers 2 different types of reviews for each cancer. The first one is written for patients and the second one is written for health professionals.

Obviously, there are far more details in the one written for health professionals. But, as you go through this process, you'll be amazed at how quickly your understanding will grow and your ability to read reports written for doctors will grow as well.

I'm going to show you where to access the two different reviews. My advice is to read the one that is written for patients first.

Reading the patient review may be enough for you to feel comfortable. But, if you want to explore in more depth, then read the review written for health professionals.

This particular website has a ton of information. Later, it'll be a good idea for you to just browse and read as much as you can. But, for now, just read the sections I'll advise you to read.
