SEARCH PUB MED
Ok, I’m ready. Can you show me how to search Pub Med?
To get started with the search process we have to familiarize ourselves with the basic Pub Med search screen. Here is the link for Pub Med at www.pubmed.gov . Here is the home page:

As you can see there is announcement on the day that I snapped the photo of the search page. The announcement may change from day to day. But the basic search format won’t change.
We’re going to use a simple 6 step process with a highly recommended but optional 7th step. I’m going to illustrate each step with a specific example.
You may want to print out the next page and follow it when you do your own searches.
Recommended 7 Step Process for Searching Pub Med
1. Enter the search terms into the search box and click GO.
2. Browse through the titles of the articles that come up. Choose an
article title that seems to best match the topic you’re searching.
3. Click on Related Articles (Don’t worry – I’ll show you exactly
where this link is)
4. Browse through this new list. If any article seems to be a better
match, click on Related Articles again.
5. Sort this list so that the most current articles come up first.
6. Click on the most interesting articles and read the information. Jot
down any interesting facts or comments so that you can discuss
them with your doctor if necessary.
Optional but Highly Recommended 7th step
7. I recommend that you especially search for what are called review
articles. Review articles summarize the medical literature on a particular topic. In a way, the authors of the review article have done all the work for you in summarizing all the previously written articles on a topic.
Click on Reviews (again, I’ll show you exactly where this link is).
Then begin reading.
By following this simple system you don’t have to know about the inner workings of Pub Med and such terminology as Mesh terms, subheadings, details, and a host of other phrases.
